Mary Young (Drummond) was born on September 11, 1938, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Pasadena, CA. She passed away on June 2, 2019 at the age of 80 after a lengthy illness. Her family moved to Stockton when she was a young girl. Mary attended schools in Stockton and graduated from Stockton College in 1956.
Mary married Rudy Benincasa on March 30, 1957. Soon after their marriage, Mary began her first career as a telephone operator with Pacific Telephone. Although her first marriage ended in divorce, she continued her career with the telephone company. It wasn’t too long before she met the love of her life, Bill Young. They were married on December 17, 1972 in Stockton, CA.
After Mary finished her 35 year career with Pacific Telephone, both she and Bill began new careers; taking positions at San Quentin Prison. They relocated and lived on the prison grounds in a small cottage. Mary worked as an Office Assistance at the prison until Bill’s retirement in 1997. Upon returning to Stockton, Mary continued her employment with the State of California as an Office Assistant for the Department of Corrections, Deuel Vocational Institute. Mary finally retired in 2002 after over eleven years of public service.
At one point during their marriage, Bill became quite ill and needed a kidney. Surprisingly, Mary was a perfect match and she donated a kidney to Bill. She was so proud she was able to do this for her “sweet dear darling Bill.”
Mary loved music and dancing. She couldn’t resist dancing when a 50’s song came on. She was also a talented line dancer. Mary danced weekly with her friends at the Weberstown Mall until she could no longer participate.
Mary was a kind and loving person. She believed in the Lord and knew that she would see her Savior, Jesus Christ, one day and be reunited with Bill.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Alberta Drummond; her husband, Billie Ross Young; her Step-Mother, Myrtle Drummond; her sister, Sandra Drummond; and her brother, James Drummond.
Mary is survived by her sister, Barbara J. Miller of Milpitas, CA and her brother, Donald Drummond (Michelle) of Manteca, CA; her former sister-in-law, Bonnie Ryan (Kevin) and her nephew, Gary Benincasa (Lori); as well as many other nieces, nephews and other family members.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Memory Care Unit at the MBK Senior Living Community in Stockton and to the staff of Optimal Hospice for their excellent care of Mary. A celebration of life is planned for Monday, June 24, 2019, 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel at First Baptist Church Lodi with a reception to follow.
