Obituary for Joan Waugh

Print
On October 18, 2018, Joan Waugh, affectionately known as Ma Waugh, beloved mother, wife, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully as she slept. Joan was born in Stockton in 1931 to Henry and Loreita von Berg and lived most of her life in Stockton. Her family moved to Carson City during World War II due to her father’s military contract to train flight instructors, after which they returned to Stockton. She graduated from Stockton High School and from Stockton College, where she majored in music.

Joan was a superb musician and began studying piano at the age of 4. When she was 17, she performed the Liszt Piano Concerto #1 In E-flat major with the Stockton Symphony Orchestra. She accompanied many instrumental and vocal soloists, as well as many choirs, throughout her life. She was also an outstanding singer and sang in the Stockton Chorale and the Central United Methodist Church Choir. She shared her wonderful musical gifts with many.

Joan’s father, Henry, was a pioneer aviator and flight instructor. Consequently, Joan acquired pilot skills at an early age and soloed when she was just a teenager.

In 1949, Joan married Clifford Martin, who passed away in 1956. She was married to Edward Hannay from 1958 until 1990. In 1994, she married the love of her life, Robert Donald Waugh and they lived happily together until his death in 2016.

Joan worked most of her life as an administrative secretary and worked for UOP, Central United Methodist Church, and she retired from Valley Mountain Regional Center

Joan is survived by her six children: Kathryn Hannay (husband Tom McCray), Adriane Antonelli (husband Robert), Dustyn, Anne Cammack (husband Michael), Alison Grey (husband Roger) and step-son Robert D. Waugh, Jr. (wife Suzanne); her sister-in-law Jessie Hannay; her six grandchildren: Zebadiah Hardin (wife Alyson), Sarah Cammack, Martin Cammack (wife Ayla), Ryder McCray (wife Nicole), Caitlin Waugh (husband Brandon Skinner) and Dylan Waugh (wife Sadie); and her great-grandson, Michael Rion Cammack.

There will be a Celebration of Joan’s Life on November 10, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 3700 Pacific Avenue, Stockton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stockton Symphony, the Friends of Chamber Music, or the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
